One way to get to Kodiak besides plane is taking the ferry. The Alaska Marine Highway System was founded in 1948. On January 3rd, 1959 Alaska became the 49th state, making MV Chilkat the first sate-owned ferry. These bonds enabled the state commission four new vessels and build docks throughout Southeast Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula.

The Highway system currently has 11 vessels available. The 11 vessels are Aurora, Chenega, Columbia, Fairweather, Kennicott, LeConte, Lituya, Malaspina, Matanuska, Taku, and Tustumena. Only two of which go to Kodiak which are the Tustumena and the Kennicott.

Another great reason to take the ferry to Kodiak is the great wildlife you will get to see along the way. To book your trip with the Alaska Marine Highway you can call them at our local office at (907) 486-3800.
