Where does the name "Kodiak" come from?

There are varying stories about how the town name came about. There were many different names used by the Natives of Kodiak and the Russians that settled in Kodiak. The word "Kigikhtak" means island; "Kiktahgmitt" means island people; "Kiktagamutes" means islanders and "Kadyak" comes closest to the pronunciation used by islanders. In 1890 the name "Kadiak" was adopted as the official spelling, but island continued to us "Kodiak" until it was adopted.
