2005 Calendar of Events

January 7-9: Russian Christmas and Starring
"Starring" is one the unique traditions of the Orthodox Church in Kodiak. This begins on Christmas Day (Russian Orthodox Calendar is the Julian calendar) immediately following the Vespers Service. A choir following a large twirling star goes to homes of the faithful to sing the joyful news. Contact: Father John Dunlop, 414 Mission Road, Kodiak, AK 99615 or 907-486-3854. Starring is also observed in the six villages throughout the Kodiak Island Borough (Akhiok, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, Port Lions).
January 14: Russian New Year and Masquerade Ball
Featuring a smorgasbord style dinner of many varieties of Russian food. After all have eaten, people go home and return a few minutes later fully masked. There is dancing and judging of the costumes. Unmasking takes place at midnight. The public is welcome. Admission. Contact Selma McKee at 486-1742.

January 21: Baranov Museum's Art Reception and Open House

April 16-24: Whalefest: A Migration Celebration
Whale watchers celebrate the return of migrating whales. Whale sightings reported daily, with special art, literature and performances scheduled throughout the festival. April - May: Old Harbor Whaling Festival
Visit America's last commercial whaling station at Port Hobron and historic Three Saints Bay - site of the first Russian settlement in Alaska and venture out to view migrating whales. Contact Sitkalidik Lodge at (907) 286-9246.

Children from around Kodiak Island are invited to help release coho salmon fry raised in classrooms and learn more about this valuable resource when they visit hands-on salmon activity booths, including the NEW 40' aquatic education classroom. May 26-30: Kodiak Crab Festival

May 26: Predicted Mile Run

May 28: Kid's Foot Race
Kids are divided into age groups from two to about twelve for a 100-yard race. Ribbons awarded to winners and participants. Contact City Parks and Recreation at (907) 486-8665.
May 29: Chad Ogden Ultramarathon (43 miles)
Hilly course, beginning at Miller Field in Chiniak at 6:00 AM and ending at the Harbormaster Building in downtown Kodiak. This race attracts runners from all over the world. Contact City Parks and Recreation at (907) 486-8665.
May 29: Crab Festival Marathon
A 26-mile marathon renowned as one of the most scenic marathons in the world. Race starts at Kalsin Bay and ends at the Harbormaster Building. Contact City Parks and Recreation at (907) 486-8665.
 
May 29: Pillar Mountain Running Race
A 9.2-mile mountain race offering runners grueling competition. The race begins at the Harbor Master building and continues up Pillar Mountain Road, along the ridge, and down a rugged backside into Swampy Acres and returns back to the finish via Rezanof Drive. May 29: Fisherman's Memorial Service For Those Lost At Sea
3:00 p.m. in front of Harbormasters Office. Contact Fisherman's Wives, Colleen Newman, (907) 486-3802.
May 30: Blessing of the Fleet
Organized by the Kodiak Harbormaster's Office. The Fathers from the Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church bless all vessels, from large commercial fishing vessels to kayaks. Contact Kodiak Harbor Master's office at (907) 486-8080.
 
May 30: Rubber Duck Race
An annual Rotary fundraiser for scholarship funds, wagers purchase a numbered rubber duck that is released into the Buskin River. The swiftest, most cunning canard to cross the finish line earns its owner a handsome share of the proceeds. Contact Kodiak Noon Rotary, Box 652, Kodiak, AK 99615
 
June 11: All-American Soap-Box Derby Trial Run

June 18: All-American Soap Box Derby

July 3-4: Independence Day Celebrations
At midnight on July 3, a large fireworks display over Chiniak Bay marks the beginning of Independence Day celebrations.  Island communities celebrate with parades and special observance. In Kodiak the Multi-cultural Committee holds a parade in celebration of the community's diverse mix of races and cultures.  Contact Kodiak City Clerk at 907-486-8636.
 
July 4: American Legion Independence Day 10K
Starts at USCG Base Guard Post at 10:00 AM. Flags donated by American Legion Post No. 17 to winners in men's and women's categories. Contact City Parks and Recreation at (907) 486-8665.
July 4: American Legion Independence Day Parade
Parade forms at Oscar's dock at 12:30 p.m. and begins at 1:00 p.m. Ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at the flagpole of American Legion parking lot, lunch follows at 2:30 p.m.; chili cook-off 3:00 p.m. with a $100 cash prize and trophy to winner. Prizes for runners up. Tug of War and pie-eating contest for kids after lunch. Shows by various groups throughout the afternoon. Festivities will proceed rain or shine. July 4: 2nd Annual KWRCC Steppin' Up & Steppin' Out
Proceeds to the Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center. Registration for the 5K walk/run begins at 9:00 a.m. at Mill Bay Coffee, proceed to Miller Point at Fort Abercrombie and back to Mill Bay Coffee. Participants raise their own registration fee - minimum $10. Prizes awarded to top 3 individuals who raise the most in donations. Anyone under 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Excavation of a local archaeological site by museum archaeologists and community volunteers. Location: Zaimka Mound at Cliff Point and Museum. College and high school credit available. July 15-16: Bear Country Music Festival
An annual musical extravaganza that includes a full-spectrum of bluegrass, country, folk, soft rock and Alaskan music. Over fifty bands and musicians from Alaska are slated to perform. Contact: Kodiak Lions Club 907-486-6117.
August 6: Barefoot in the Park Quintathalon

August 7-9: Pilgrimage to St. Herman's Monks Lagoon
Celebrating, on these dates in 1970, the canonization of Father Herman by the Orthodox Church in America. There is an annual pilgrimage to his home site on Spruce Island. August 13: Kodiak Kid's Pink Salmon Jamboree

August 13: 2nd Annual Salmonberry Festival
Noon to 6:00 p.m. Located at Kodiak Island Winery, mile 36.4 on the Chiniak Highway. Tents set up for crafts and food vendors, live music. Bring your berry creations for judging and prizes, kid's contests including fish throwing. Free Entry! Call 486-4848 for information and to reserve booth space (free, bring your own table).

Main event rodeo and blue ribbon fair exhibits during this fun-filled weekend. Events include: calf roping, steer dressing, barrel racing, team roping, bull and bronc riding. Special fun for kids includes pie eating, halibut cleaning, bubble gum blowing, and Rodeo Queen and Little Miss Rodeo Contests. Petting zoo and pony rides. 43 mile run begins in Chiniak at the Airstrip, registration 9:30 a.m. Teams of 5 run a relay to try to beat Harry Johnson's individual time of 4 1/2 hours. $50 fee, to benefit KHS CC runner's trip to Western Regionals. December 18: Kodiak Baptist Mission: Currier and Ives Old Fashioned Christmas
5:30 p.m. An evening of old-fashioned fun for the entire family.  Ice-skating, sleigh rides, hayrides, caroling around a bonfire, refreshments and a live nativity remind us of simpler times.  Enjoy a wonderful view of the Harbor Stars fleet parade from the KBM picnic pavillion.  Contact Rita or Heather Norton at 907-486-4126.
