The Kodiak Island Borough has 4,800,000 acres within its
boundaries. Ownership of this upland area is constantly changing. This
trend has accelerated in recent years because of transfers from Native
corporations to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
Here is the latest estimate of acreage held by various owners:
The City of Kodiak owns 280 acres of land
on Near Island, accessible by bridge from downtown Kodiak. It is the site
of the Fisheries Industrial Technology Center of the University of Alaska
- Fairbanks and the Kodiak Research Fisheries Center, a multi-agency research
complex, owned and operated by the Kodiak Island Borough. Much of this
land is adjacent to Kodiak's new harbor, St.
Herman Harbor. The city is also building a new public saltwater float
plane facility at Trident Basin on Near Island.
The Alaska Aerospace Development
Corporation (AADC), a public corporation of the State of Alaska,
has sucessfully launched a number of rockets from the commercial spaceport
on Kodiak Island. The Kodiak
Launch Complex (KLC) is located on 3,100 acres of state-owned land
at Narrow Cape, about 30 miles south of Kodiak. The area is an ideal
location for launching small satellites into polar, high inclination
and Molniya orbits. The State of Alaska, U.S. government, communities
of Kodiak Island and private aerospace companies are supporting the
development. To learn more on the impact of the Kodiak Launch Complex
