Beach Combing
Kodiak Island offers hundreds of miles of isolated beaches for exploring for treasures from the sea. Colorful sea glass and remants from commercial fishing across the Pacific wash ashore on Kodiak’s beaches. Look for shells, glass balls, and antique fishing lures while gulls and kittiwakes provide the music. Bald eagles also often accompany you on your beach combing expedition.

Tidepooling
Tidal variation in the archipelago is about 12 feet. Minus tides reveal the unique creatures that inhabit the intertidal zone. Anemone, sea stars, chitons and limpets may be observed. Tide pool walks are conducted throughout the summer at Fort Abercrombie, but many beaches in the archipelago are worth investigating. Blue mussels and a variety of clams are also found in the intertidal zone. However, never harvest shellfish without checking for the possibility of paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Surfing
A few hardy souls surf the icy waters of Kodiak Island. It’s called extreme surfing not so much because of the size of the waves, but because of the frigid temperatures. Air temperature generally falls between -5 and 30 degrees Farenheit in winter with water temperatures of 36 – 45 degrees Farenheight.
