Hikers and mountain bikers will find
a network of trails around the town of Kodiak for
exploring. Remote island hikes are also an option
from remote wilderness lodges, including multi-day
treks through the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
Most trails around town are ranked moderately difficult,
but easy trails are available in most parks and recreation
areas. More challenging, technical trails can also
be found.
Audubon Hikes
The Kodiak Audubon Society conducts numerous hikes
and outings throughout the summer. They are a good
way for visitors and new residents to become acquainted
with local flora and fauna and to find out about the
island's many hiking trails. Most hikes are on Saturdays
and begin in front of the Visitors' Center/Ferry Terminal
on Marine Way. Hikes are organized almost every weekend
from mid May through mid September. For more information,
pick up an Audubon hiking schedule at the Kodiak Island
Convention and Visitors Bureau's Visitor Center.
For those who prefer to hike on their own, the
Kodiak Audubon Society also publishes
a Kodiak Hiking Guide and a Hiking and Birding Guide.
Copies are available at the Visitors Center.
